Very often, I have people come up to me and ask, "What is NLP all about?" And my answer to them is very simple, "it’s all about the modeling of human excellence!"
NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming, a name that encompasses the three most influential components involved in producing human experience:
Neuro: The nervous system through which our experience is processed via five senses (sight, smell, touch, hearing, taste)
Linguistic: Language and other nonverbal communication systems through which our neural representations are coded, ordered and given meaning (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, gustatory, olfactory, auditory digital)
Programming: Ability to discover and utilize the programs that we run in our neurological systems to achieve our outcomes
Founded in the early 1970s, NLP originated from the question of "What makes a difference between someone who achieves success in any areas of his life as compared to one who doesn’t?"
Back then, 2 men by the name of Richard Bandler and John Grinder were passionately pursuing “profound” knowledge. They were interested to discover ways in which they can elicit and replicate those patterns of excellence from individuals of various fields- whether it is in sports, business, therapy, education etc.
As such, they started studying and working closely with three outstanding therapists during the time.
These psychotherapists included Fritz Pearls- he coined the term Gestalt Therapy, Virginia Satir- known for her approach to family therapy and Milton Erickson- an American psychiatrist specializing in medical hypnosis and family therapy.
However, it was only during the 1980s that NLP shot to fame, when world-renowned motivation speaker Anthony Robbins started using some techniques and tools that he had learned from this field and applied them extremely effectively on some of the worst patients that many psychologists, psychiatrists etc were previously unable to handle!
In less than 2 decades, NLP had grown to become one of the largest personal development fields in the world. Today, it is widely known and acknowledged as the father of innumerable personal development techniques, tools, programs etc.
Moreover NLP is known to be used and advocated by many great achievers and successful people in the world such as Oprah Winfrey, Bill Clinton, Paul McKenna, Tony Blair etc.
